5 Best Pizza Restaurants 2019

Someone once said that “even bad pizza is still good”. We could not disagree more, life is definitely too short to eat bad pizza! As parents, we don’t get to go out for pizza enough and that is why we have compiled a list of the 5 of the best places in Australia to sit down and eat amazing pizza. And they are all, of course, in Canberra!

This is a hotly contested and highly controversial list, with so many good pizza places in Canberra! However, we could only pick 5. There are also some fantastic pizza takeaway spots that are excluded because this is a dine-in restaurant review. There are a couple of takeaway shout outs at the bottom of the article.

The secret to great pizza is a wood fired oven running at least 350 degrees and good dough, with simple ingredients.

Ostani Bar, 5 Bourke St, Barton ACT 2600.

A Friday favourite of ours, Ostani has been recently renovated and boasts a fairly hip and youngish crowd, but somehow also manages to be family friendly. It is a great place to start the weekend with a beer and a fresh made pizza. Their Margherita pizzas are classic Italian style with fresh basil and a delicious rich tomato sauce. You just can’t go wrong with simplicity.

An added bonus is that Ostani is attached to the Realm Hotel, which has extended opening hours:
Monday to Friday 8am – late.
Saturday and Sunday 11am – late.

Molto Italian, 155/43 Eastlake Parade, Kingston ACT 2604.

We love Molto! Their pizza is amazing. We smashed a Margherita pizza, which was perfectly cooked by their Italian pizza chef. They are so authentic their chefs are Italian too. Head down and sit in the sun for lunch or enjoy an evening out with special people. Either way they have you covered.
P.S. We also highly recommend their pasta cheese wheel!

Open for dinner everyday 6-10pm.
Lunches Tuesday to Sunday 12-3pm.

Trecento Restaurant, Unit 33/18 Flinders Way, Griffith ACT 2603.

We love Trecento, a cosy restaurant tucked away in Manuka- but do book as they do get busy. You can watch them making your pizza from your table too, if that interests you. I highly recommend their aptly named Prosciutto and Rocket Primavera pizza (which means spring in Italian). It was colourful, fresh and tasty as. Pay them a visit, they are super friendly.

They also do a mean breakfast which we have featured before- but I warn you, don’t try this alone!

Open for dinner everyday 6-9:30pm.
Lunches Tuesday to Sunday 12-2:30pm.

SoLita Pizzeria, Restaurant and Bar, 143 London Circuit, Canberra ACT 2600.

What’s better than pizza? Two pizzas!! We love the woodfired pizza from @solita_pizza_pasta_bar- so much so that they made it into our Top 5 Pizza restaurants video- coming soon!

This was a great find, tucked in at Bailey’s Corner in the city.  I just wish I had visited sooner. Their pizzas are absolutely amazing, perfectly wood fired dough and simply delicious. A member of a very select group, the Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani. We will definitely be going back for more- and you should, too!

Open Monday to Saturday 11:30-2:30 and 5pm – late.

Locale Pizzeria, Shop 5, Hopetoun Circuit, Deakin ACT 2600.

Always a winner with consistently amazing food. If your local pizza place could be classed as fine dining, then this is how that would be defined.
Their wood fired pizza is always fantastic and my wife would die if they ever took the polenta chips off their menu. I personally love their white based pizzas, Quattro Formaggi (four cheese) and the Gamberi (prawn) pizza is the best. I am still hoping that one day I will walk in to be pleasantly surprised to find the ‘Ligure’ on their specials list. It was a white based prawn and chilli pizza that was absolutely spectacular!

Open every day 12pm-3pm and 5pm – late.

Awesome Takeaway Pizza Options.

A shout out for great takeaway wood fired pizza goes to Pizza Arte in Kingston and Mama Dough in Ainslie.  For catering, Alex the Pizza Guy is definitely our go-to. He comes to you and serves pizza, as well as dessert!

Happy Eating!

5 Fabulous French Toasts of Canberra

Recently, we collaborated with local Canberra Instagram bloggers The Canberra Brunch Diaries to create this highly delicious video of their favourite French Toast in the Nation’s Capital.  Any excuse to eat delicious French Toast for 5 weekends in a row?  We’re in!

But let’s not keep you waiting,  here is The Canberra Brunch Diaries with “5 French Toasts of Canberra”, in no particular order.

Patissez, 21 Bougainville, Griffith, ACT 2603.

Oh Canada! Check out that pour!

Patissez may be known for their freak shakes, but they have so much more on offer, including a dedicated french toast menu!  The menu features eight different toppings options for their house-made brioche french toast.  We enjoyed the Banoffee (banana, caramel, honeycomb), the Oh Canada! (bacon, maple syrup, milk crumb) and the Passionfruit Pav (passionfruit, smashed pav, freeze dried rasperries) all served with vanilla gelato.  With friendly service, generous portion sizes and catering for all tastes, this is a must on any foodie bucket list.

Little Oink, 22 Cook Place, Cook ACT 2614.

Pigging out at Little Oink.

For French Toast without the hassle of parking in one of the busier shopping precincts, check out the french toast on offer at Cook shops. Their french toast changes with the seasons and we visited when the caramel apple french toast was on offer.  Brioche French Toast with roasted apples, caramel sauce, custard, cinnamon crumble and berries.  Pretty as a picture!

Penny University, 15 Kennedy St, Kingston, ACT, 2604.

We’ve got our money on the Penny University Banoffee French Toast!

The original and the best – Banoffee Croissant French Toast from Penny University.  This dish has been on the menu for years at Penny’s but they continually make it more and more special.  A french toasted croissant filled with banana and topped with crushed peanuts, vanilla mascarpone, popcorn and salted caramel sauce.  Go with an empty stomach and get your sweet tooth and Instagram ready for this one!

Highroad, 1 Woolley St, Dickson, ACT 2601.

The Canberra Brunch Diaries Highroad French Toast.

Highroad continues to pump out a quality french toast option with each seasonal menu.  They’ve always got a french toast with a twist – think carrot cake, sticky date and banana bread!!  The winter 2019 option is Tiramisu French Toast with chocolate mousse, ona coffee cream cheese, sour cherry, shortbread and mascarpone.  Aside from the french toast, Highroad is always a favourite for all the seating space, interior decor, service and of course, coffee!

Teddy Picker’s, 67 Constitution Ave, Campbell, ACT 2612.

Teddy Picker’s and their delicious custardy French Toast.

Teddy Picker’s have perfected the french toast formula and making it our favourite french toast in Canberra.  While their toppings change with the seasons, they always feature a custard pressed french toast with milk crumb and ice cream.  Currently Teddy’s have spoilt us with not only vanilla ice cream, but a scoop of the one-and-only Gelato Messina passionfruit gelato, as well as generous lashings of lemon curd and meringue.  We also love that their menu holds on to a few favourite dishes and rotates others seasonally.  There’s always friendly service and pets are welcome too.

5 Reasons why we ❤️ Canberra

We just love Canberra.  Here are 5 reasons why …

5.  It’s beautiful.

A stunning image, captured from Miguel’s drone.

Seriously, it really is beautiful.  It’s a city, with a country feel.  With green, tree-lined streets and an abundance of open spaces, Canberra was well designed to incorporate nature.  This city is gorgeous in every season.  Contemporary architecture, beautiful sunsets and amazing skies complete this beautiful city.

4. Our people.

Canberra locals Thaliy and Em from Instagram account @thecanberrabrunchdiaries.

We’re pretty sure that the people of Canberra are the friendliest and most welcoming Australians in the entire country, definitely the most polite!  But the best thing about them is that they love getting out and doing stuff.  It barely matters what is on- a food or music festival, a balloon ride or game of rugby, Canberrans will support it!

3. Balloons.

The Balloons make a spectacular feature in our skies.

Balloons.  Need we say more?  Not really, but we will!  Every year, The Canberra Balloon Spectacular is an awesome way to see a whole bunch of balloons at the one time.  It’s a rite of passage in Canberra- getting up before dawn and heading out to watch the balloons take off.  Hop on a balloon ride or have some breakfast and watch them up close getting ready for flight.  Definitely an experience you do not want to miss.

2. Family and lifestyle.

Beers, burgers and kids entertainment at Capital Brewery, Fyshwick.

There really is nowhere as good as Canberra to raise families! We have tried to keep Canberra a bit of a secret, but it keeps getting voted most liveable city in the world, so it’s hard to keep it under wraps.  We have the best roads, schools and parks.  The city is humming with activity, the food scene is off the charts and we are clearly over-represented on the sports grounds around the country.  We really do have it all, but please don’t tell anyone.

1. Food!

A delicious cheeseburger from Ona, Manuka.

Canberra has become the number 1 food destination in the country.  Our food scene has exploded in recent years.  With gifted chefs and a natural abundance of spectacular produce, Canberra is creating its own niche.  We have some of the best wineries and breweries in the world, alongside amazing restaurants and food festivals.  We are definitely spoilt for choice when we dine out!

So that wraps up why “We ❤️ Canberra”.  We’re Canberra-proud and we wouldn’t live anywhere else!  Follow our Instagram and Facebook accounts to check out more of what makes Canberra so amazing!

5 Amazing Cocktails of Canberra!

Canberra is blessed with so many cocktail bars and restaurants. TheCanberra5 has collated 5 of our favourite cocktails.  Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Alter Ego, 10 Bunda St, Canberra City ACT 2601.

Express yourself with an Espresso Martini from Alter Ego!

Alter Ego offers tasty food and all-day cocktails.  Down for a breakfast cocktail?  Here is the place!  They also have espresso martini’s on tap, utlising vodka from Canberra distillery Underground Spirits and local Bellerophon Coffee.  Miguel had the opportunity to sample a few of the cocktails and he was a big fan of the delicious Coffee Caramel Martini. His other fave cocktail was the Bellini, so simple and delicious! We hear their Eggs Benedict bar is awesome as well. Breakfast cocktails and Eggs Benny? Hell, yeah!

Momoda, Melbourne Building, 39-47 Northbourne Ave, Canberra City ACT 2601.

Leng Lui- Momoda’s beautiful lady!
Momoda is a delicious asian fusion restaurant/bar that offers a great night out for a romantic dinner or a catch up with your mates.  Their lunch specials are always cheap and tasty, too!

The food is outstanding (hello kangaroo spring rolls and cheeseburger dumplings!) and their cocktails are incredible.  The Leng Lui (Beautiful Lady) cocktail is the perfect blend of sweet with a touch of sour.  A delicious combination of vodka, lavender and rose water, lychee liqueur, and elderflower makes this one cocktail that goes down very (too?!) easily!  The freeze-dried hibiscus also adds a pretty touch.

Howling Moon, Canberra Rex Hotel, 150 Northbourne Ave, Braddon ACT 2612.

One Night in Braddon. You will most definitely want two!
Howling Moon is one unique spot in Canberra.  This panoramic rooftop bar is set atop the Canberra Rex Hotel, with gorgeous views over the city. Along with a tasty menu, delicious cocktails and friendly staff, this is the place to be!  Their One Night in Braddon cocktail is a sweet finish to the working week (or any other day that tickles your fancy!).  Created with maraschino liqueur, vodka, cranberry juice, violet syrup and pink grapefruit.

First Edition Restaurant and Bar, Novotel Canberra, 1/65 Northbourne Ave, Canberra City ACT 2601.

First Impressions are important. This cocktail is one of them!

First Edition is located at the lovely Novotel Canberra– with a light rail stop conveniently out the front!  First Edition is a gorgeous bar, with luxurious velvet seating and comfortable lounges- perfect to settle into for the evening!  A spot by the window gives you great views of Canberra’s nightlife.  Not only does First Edition have their own gin (created with The Canberra Distillery), they also have a signature cocktail featuring this very said gin!  The First Impression cocktail is finished with fresh passionfruit, ice and clapped basil – so refreshing and tasty!  If you’re not a fan of sweet cocktails, this is the one for you.

Hot tip- the food looks very tasty!

Kokomo’s, 1 Genge St, Canberra City ACT 2601.

The lovely Maryanne Irhia with Blu-Tang Clan.
Kokomo’s is an adventure in itself.  Keeping in theme with the lush tropical decor, their cocktails are an island escape captured in a glass.  Maryanne Irhia- Kokomo’s Ambassodor, local Instagram Influencer and Canberra’s resident party gal- introduced us to the Blu-Tang Clan– a delicious cocktail garnished with it’s own rubber ducky!  Maryanne says that she’s instantly transported to the tropics with how easy it is to drink.  “It tastes like summer and pairs nicely with anything on the menu. Did I forget to mention that it’s totally Insta worthy?”

Want to experience these delicious cocktails?  We’ve created TheCanberra5 Cocktail Bar Crawl below.

But most importantly, always drink responsibly.
