5 Kid-approved places to eat in Canberra

Kid-friendly places to eat in Canberra- there’s certainly a number of spots around this city, but are they kid-approved? We took it to our resident experts to find out. We’re looking for places that have good food, a nice environment and an outdoor playground. We wanted places where the kids are enjoying themselves, without resorting to technology to be entertained.

So here’s our Top 5 for kid-friendly, kid-approved places to eat:

5. Fox and Bow, 4 Farrer Place, Farrer ACT 2607.

An awesome cafe in Farrer.

What a treat! The breakfasts at Fox and Bow are definitely among the best in Canberra. Just quietly, I absolutely love the ‘Mr Fox’. You simply cannot go wrong with eggs and chorizo. With a basketball hoop and ball, plenty of building blocks and milk crates in the lane along the side of the cafe, the kids will be kept entertained for long enough to enjoy a nice meal, before sharing some family basketball time.

4. Ricardo’s Cafe, Jamison Plaza, 1/1 Bowman Place, Macquarie ACT 2614.

Swing by Ricardo’s!

This is an old favourite, for obvious reasons. The desserts are stunning and a park is ideally located next door. The novelty of picking out a delicious cake from the display window is half the fun! Although I must say, I have found trying the traditional staples- eg apple pie- can also pay off. Their lunch menu is delicious- we recently reviewed their Korean Fried Chicken burger here, and their salads are tasty and filling. The kids were kept entertained with the playground for hours and didn’t want to leave.
Our tip is to reserve a table right next to the playground, it’s the perfect spot to watch the kids play.

3. Rodney’s Garden Cafe, 24a Beltana Road, Piallago ACT 2609.

Slide into Rodney’s!

Rodney’s is another family favourite. The nursery is lush and green- perfect when the weather warms up! Tables can also be reserved near the recently upgraded play equipment and the kids always have a good time. The only downside is if you have a “runner”. Some little people find it very tempting to run through the nursery! The food is delicious- we’re big fans of the Korean Fried Chicken (we’ve reviewed it here) and they have a menu that the kids love.

2. Capital Brewing Co. 3/1 Dairy Road, Fyshwick ACT 2609.

Beers, burgers and kids entertainment!

A bit different to the other spots in this post. Here we have a great combination of burgers and beer! Not just any burgers or beers, but some of Canberra’s best beers and burgers, (see the reviews here and here). Parents can relax with a freshly brewed beer or a wine and a super tasty burger. Meanwhile, the kids can get their faces painted before running around outside or discovering the cubby house in the courtyard. When in the pursuit of hoppiness, this is my pick for a sunny Sunday afternoon session. They’ll love it, so you’ll love it!

1. Ivy and the Fox, Old Canberra House, 73 Lennox Crossing, Acton ACT 2601.

A great cafe for all seasons.

One of my favourite places in Canberra! Everything about this place is fantastic- the food is spectacular, the milkshakes are delicious and the scenery is amazing. The Ivy and the Fox is a venue for all seasons, with a fireplace in winter and sprawling lawns to run on in summer. You can even go for a walk around the lake if your breakfast is a little indulgent, which I highly recommend here.

We think it’s a pretty good list of places to chill with the kids- places where they’ll have fun, so you can relax. Let us know if you have any suggestions!

5 Milkshakes You Just Wanna Spoon! (Kid-friendly edition)

There is something incredibly comforting about a milkshake. Sometimes you just need a pick-me-up, sometimes you just want a filling, delicious drink … or sometimes you’re 4 years old and your entire world revolves around bubbly, chocolate milk and colourful straws! Either way, here are some great places to get your frothy fix:

5. Kettle & Tin, 71 Mawson Place, Mawson ACT 2605.

Check out those bubbles!

This hidden gem brings us yet another Top 5 entry (they featured in our Top 5 Eggs Benedict blog). This time, their delicious chocolate malt milkshake made the cut. They have a variety of flavours, including banana, which is also featured in this vlog.

4. Space Kitchen, 3G/12 Furzer St, Phillip ACT 2606.

Oreos … mmmm!

With so many options for shakes, it was hard to narrow it down. We ended up ordering two- the Oreo Peppermint and the Nutella Shake. Everyone knows that mint and chocolate are a brilliant combo, but putting them in milk with chunky cookie is genio (genius). I loved it! I got my resident Nutella Experts to drink the Nutella shake and they gave me a bigger-than-usual thumbs up. In fact, I couldn’t get any words out of the kids, because they were too busy drinking- clearly a good sign!

3. Ivy and The Fox, 73 Lennox Crossing, Acton ACT 2601.

All that chocolate syrup!

The whole family loves coming here with its big outdoor space. The kids love coming here for the milkshakes even more. I loved seeing all the rich chocolate covering the inside of the mason jars. With 3 scoops of ice cream, this milkshake was creamy, frothy and amazing. As I write this blog, I am still hanging for another Ivy and the Fox milkshake- even after consuming a very filling breakfast (which you can read about in a future blog!).

2. Patissez, 21 Bougainville St, Griffith ACT 2603.

So gooey, so good!

There are so many reasons to go to Patissez (and I am sure you will hear more from us about Patissez in the future). But for now, I will stick with the Freak Shake! This over-the-top, decadent piece of art milkshake is surprisingly delicate- even with its choc fudge, chocolate, a layer of liquid white gold chocolate, brownie and toasted marshmallow. It’s amazing they can get all that goodness into a shake. Guess that’s why it’s called the Freak Shake!

1. Stand By Me, 1 Lyons Place, Lyons ACT 2606.

Check out the malt!

This milkshake doesn’t require too many words. The secret to the success of this fantastic milkshake is its simplicity. I am not sure exactly what they do in that kitchen, but this is the creamiest, maltiest, milkiest and chocolatiest milkshake ever. It is simply tasty AF!

We haven’t even started on the Adults milkshakes with spirits and creams yet … I am a little scared of those. Please stay tuned and let us know if you know of a great milkshake, kid-friendly or of the adult variety.

Happy eating!
-Miguel
