When we started our quest to find great pies in Canberra, I thought that we would find a few amazing pies, but not the abundance of list-worthy pies that I came across. I was pleasantly surprised. Narrowing it down to just 5 was hard, but someone has to do it! So without further ado (and in no particular order) …
Crust Bakery, 12 Dalby St, Fyshwick ACT 2609.
From Thursday to Sunday, you can venture down to Crust Bakery to grab a pie, which is just another reason to get to the Fyshwick Markets. This is obviously one delicious pie. I had the Pepper Steak Pie, which is often my go-to pie flavour. The pastry was just how I like it when I am not doing the cleaning up afterwards- soft and firm in all the right places, but nice and flaky on top. The pepper was strong, but not overpowering, and the steak was great. Great Pie!
Griffith Butchery, 10 Barker St, Griffith ACT 2603.
I tried the Pepper Steak and Stout Pie, and I loved this pie! It was chunky and meaty, and peppery and delicious, and the pastry was soft … and as I write this review, I think I am getting caught up in the moment again! There is clearly a very good reason this shop has won so many national awards for their pies. I suspect it is also the same reason that they seem to sell so many. I will be back to try more of their amazing pies.
Wattle Snack Bar, 32 Dundas Court, Phillip ACT 2606.
Another big winner on the national awards circuit is the Wattle Snack Bar in Phillip. Now, this is where you go for bold flavours! I cannot emphasize this too strongly. Again, I had the Pepper Steak and as soon as I started, this pie got up and punched me in the face with flavour! It didn’t slow me down for long, I smashed that pie in just a couple of minutes. The proud owner and pie maker, Keith, told me he has an even better pie, which I am very much looking forward to trying!
Elaine’s Gourmet Pie Café, 71 Dundas Court, Phillip ACT 2606.
Also in Phillip, this time it was word-of-mouth that took me to this fine pie shop, and I was very grateful for the hot tip! The Chunky Steak is truly well … chunky! This is the perfect pie. Beautiful pastry with big pieces of steak, covered in just the right amount of gravy to keep it moist, without the messy dripping. So as well as delicious, it is the perfect “eat on-the-go, one-hander” pie.
Three Mills Bakery, 5 Lancaster Place, Majura Park ACT 2609.
I never thought a vegetarian pie would make the list, but the reality is that this Top 5 would not be complete without this pie. If we were doing a “fine dining pies” list, this would be that pie! I had the Spring Vegetable and Oaxaca Pie. The thin roux balances perfectly with the Oaxaca semi-hard cheese, fresh spring vegetables on a delicious garlic, onion and herb base to make the best pie I have ever had. As you can see, this pie gets all my love!
I hope you get to try some of these and let us know what you think!
